APS X-ray Science Division scientist Chris Benmore is part of a team that has received a U.S. Department of Energy INCITE Leadership Computing award for 2016. INCITE, which stands for Innovative and Novel Computational Impact on Theory and Experiment Program, offers scientists the opportunity to achieve advances in their research that would not be possible without access to powerful supercomputing resources. Large-scale, computationally intensive efforts focused on engineering and science “grand challenges” are allocated millions of core hours each year through the INCITE program. Benmore’s project is looking at developing a fundamental understanding of what happens to nuclear fuel materials during a reactor core melt down, which could lead to the development of safer fuels.
