The Council of the Mineralogical Society of America (MSA) has elected Guoyin Shen, beamline scientist with HPCAT-XSD at the Advanced Photon Source, as a fellow of the Society. Members are chosen who have contributed significantly to the advancement of mineralogy, crystallography, geochemistry, petrology, or allied sciences and whose scientific contribution utilized mineralogical studies or data. His primary research has been to examine the behavior of relevant Earth materials at Earth’s deep pressure-temperature conditions, new materials discovery and their emergent properties under extreme conditions.  Dr. Shen joined HPCAT in 2005 as the project manager, and served as director from 2010-2018.  Currently, he shares his experimental expertise at HPCAT's BM-B end station, working closely with the user community to further their scientific goals.

His nomination by the Fellowship Committee and election by the MSA Council attests to the high regard colleagues have for his scientific activities. He joins a distinguished group of individuals who have been recognized for their outstanding contributions to the fields of mineralogy, crystallography, geochemistry, and petrology. Founded in 1919, the MSA is celebrating its Centennial with a variety of events throughout 2019.
