Spotlight on Pressure

The International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) spotlighted the work of a group of Argonne researchers who utilized two x-ray beamlines at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Photon Source in applying high pressure techniques to a new area of materials science research.

An on-line “Research News” feature titled “Framework materials yield to pressure” notes that the technique employed at X-ray Science Division beamlines 1-BM and 17-BM “demonstrate[s] that pressure offers a novel approach for generating new phases and exploring the structure-property relationships of molecular materials.”

The group’s work has been published in Yakovenko et al. (2015), Acta Cryst. B71, 252-257; doi:10.1107/S2052520615005867.

This research used resources of the Advanced Photon Source, a U.S. DOE Office of Science User Facility operated for the DOE Office of Science by Argonne National Laboratory under Contract No. DE-AC02-06CH11357.

Argonne National Laboratory is supported by the Office of Science of the U.S. Department of Energy. The Office of Science is the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States, and is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time.
