Interests
  • Time-resolved x-ray science — I have two major research programs in time-resolved x-ray science. Using high-resolution x-ray diffraction at 7-ID I am trying to understand the competing nonlinear processes semiconductors following intense laser excitation. I am also developing a new instrument at 18-ID (BioCAT) for nanosecond time-resolution SAXS from proteins in solution.

Goals

I have been associated with the APS as a student, user, or beamline scientist since 1992. Although most of my research is now based at the APS as an external user, I believe my early training as a laser and accelerator physicist will be particularly useful as the APS upgrade approaches. I have a nuanced understanding of the complex relationship between the facility, its staff, and its users. I also can represent the perspective of faculty member and students from a non-R1 University (a growing class of users). I have worked at several beamlines at the APS and around the world and built several new instruments spanning a wide variety of x-ray techniques. As a local user, I expect to attend meetings in person and continue to frequently walk the storage ring floor.
