Transporting materials to Argonne

Your experiment involves the study of various materials as identified in your proposal and listed on your Experiment Safety Assessment Form (ESAF).  Transporting these materials to Argonne must involve careful planning and consideration.  All shipments, or personal transport, of sample materials must follow the U.S. Department of Transportation regulations.  Section 14: Transport Information on the MSDS identifies each material's DOT Classification. You are required to follow these instructions without exception.  If you have any questions, contact your Beamline Contact before attempting transport.

When shipping your non-hazrdous samples to the Structural Science beamlines, the package should be addressed as follows:

Argonne National Laboratory
APS - Sector 11-BM
Attn: Lynn Ribaud
9700 S. Cass Ave., 433-D002
Lemont, IL 60439
GUP#______________
P.I. ______________

If you use the Shipping Department of your home institution, inform them that they need to include Sector, GUP, and PI information on the shipping label.

To prevent loss, or mis-delivery, you must ensure that this information is on the outside of your package!

Your vehicle, luggage, backpack, or purse is subject to inspection.  Always include, attach, or have in close proximity, documentation for the materials you are transporting.  Unlabeled powders, liquids, etc., will automatically be treated as hazardous and will be confiscated by ANL Security.

In addition, on the exterior of your package or container, be sure to include:

  • your Beamline
  • your GUP number
  • your Principal Investigator, or GUP Spokesperson.

You need to ship or carry a printed MSDS for each material, or its components.

If you ship or carry anything hazardous to Argonne, you must follow the APS guidelines:

TRANSPORTING HAZARDOUS MATERIALS

For transporting small quantities of hazardous materials in your personal vehicle, refer to the limitations below.

Identifying the contents of your return shipment is crucial for the timely return of your items.  You can expedite handling of your package by the SRS staff if you download and complete this spreadsheet.  Use complete sample names, not chemical symbols, when identifying samples.

Within this document, be sure to include:
  • Number of similar samples
  • Chemical Name (not chemical symbol!)
  • Form or phase (i.e. powder, solid, liquid, etc.)
  • Amount of material within each container
  • Value (if any)
  • Container Type (i.e. Kapton capillary, plastic vial, etc.)

If you intend to bring sample material to Argonne that is hazardous in any way, you must abide by the U.S. Department of Transportation regulations.  Failure to do so will result in cancelation of your beam time and you could be subject to U.S. DOT levied fines.
