Postdoctoral Appointee 319347:

Toward scanning probe microscopy with direct chemical and magnetic contrast

Microscopy Group / X-ray Science Division / Advanced Photon Source

Argonne National Laboratory - Argonne, Illinois 60439, USA

We are immediately seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to participate in the development of a novel high-resolution microscopy technique for imaging of nanoscale materials with chemical, electronic, and magnetic contrast. This technique will combine the sub-nanometer spatial resolution of scanning probe microscopy with the chemical, electronic, and magnetic sensitivity of synchrotron x-rays. The successful candidate will conduct innovative experiments with an already existing x-ray-enhanced scanning tunneling microscope prototype. Further, the candidate will participate in the development and construction of a new scanning probe for operation at cryogenic temperatures. We want a candidate that aggressively pursues innovative independent research, offers hands-on experience in scanning tunneling microscopy, and exhibits comprehensive knowledge of instrumentation and the experimental technique. The successful applicant must have completed a Ph.D. in physics or a related discipline, with a proven capacity for outstanding research that is reflected in a publication record.

Argonne is a U.S. Department of Energy laboratory managed by UChicago Argonne, LLC. Argonne’s site is approximately 25 miles southwest of Chicago on a beautiful 1500-acre campus-like environment. Interested candidates should send a detailed CV, along with list of publications, and the names and addresses of three references through the Argonne website at https://www.anl.gov/jobs search for XSD 319347 Postdoctoral Appointee.

Postdoctoral Appointee 319348:

X-ray fluorescence microscopy goes in situ

Microscopy Group / X-ray Science Division / Advanced Photon Source

Argonne National Laboratory - Argonne, Illinois 60439, USA

We are immediately seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to create a comprehensive experimental x-ray fluorescence research program on functional materials. A primary goal will be to develop novel in situ capabilities that allow controlling the sample environment, such as temperature, fields, and/or reaction cells. The candidate will have the great opportunity to work on state-of-the-art x-ray micro- and nanoprobes in order to establish strong multi-length scale research. We want a candidate that aggressively pursues innovative independent research, participates in scientific collaborations, and helps user operation. The candidate must be able to work independently as well as in our dynamic research team. Demonstrated excellence in synchrotron-based x-ray fluorescence or closely related technique is required. The successful applicant must have completed a Ph.D. in physics or a related discipline, with a proven capacity for outstanding research that is reflected in a publication record.
