Researchers hoping to stop the spread of malaria are taking an innovative approach: blocking transmittion of the parasite that causes the disease from humans to mosquitoes. Recent work from a collaborative team of researchers has taken this idea to the next step by identifying transmission-blocking antibodies in people who were naturally exposed to malaria parasites and mapping the structural basis for their activity. The work provides the foundation for the design of transmission-blocking vaccines against this deadly and intractable disease.
