Priorities

Priorities are how we stay focused on the things that are most important. They help position the SDM and the APS to achieve its goals. We take priorities seriously. The projects the SDM group works on and the amount of time and resources dedicated to those projects are aligned with facility goals.

APS Scientific Computing Strategy

The APS has created a facility-wide strategy to adapt to the changing demands of experimental techniques and changes in computing technology. All techniques at the APS will benefit from advances in scientific computing, analysis, and data management. Many techniques enabled by the APS-U, including coherence, imaging, and high-energy techniques will only realize their full potential with advances in computing. The APS Scientific Computing Strategy identifies the core challenges facing the APS in this area, and presents a strategy for addressing these challenges over the coming years within the anticipated resource environment at the APS, and by leveraging synergies with other parts of ANL, and across the BES and DOE complex.

XSD Coordination

Management from AES and XSD groups concerned with computing meet regularly with XSD's upper management. Priorities for the SDM group and other XSD and AES groups are discussed during this coordination meeting.

XSD Coordination meeting attendees include:

  • Patricia Fernandez (XSD Associate Division Director)
  • Pete Jemian (XSD-BC)
  • Jonathan Lang (XSD Division Director)
  • Nicholas Schwarz (XSD-SDM)
  • Kenneth Sidorowicz (AES-IT)
  • Brian Toby (XSD-CXS)
  • Stefan Vogt (XSD Associate Division Director)
Resource Evaluation Group

The APS Resource Evaluation Group (REG) guides the allocation of services at the APS to ensure that the services are delivered efficiently to accomplish the mission of the APS, and collects feedback on provided services. Components of larger APS projects may require the effort of the Scientific Software Engineering & Data Management group. Requirements for resources are discussed and allocated accordingly.
