Description

Abstract:

This presentation explores how advanced quantum beam technologies—particularly synchrotron X-rays and neutrons—are driving innovation in electrification and sustainability within the automotive industry.  An outline of the talk is:

  1. Introduction to Toyota Central R&D Labs.
  2. Case Study I: Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle – MIRAI Quantum beam techniques were used to visualize water behavior inside fuel cells, enhancing performance and enabling broader mobility applications.
  3. Case Study II: Rechargeable Batteries Visualization of lithium-ion behavior and electrolyte concentration using synchrotron radiation supports design improvements.
  4. Summary of why Quantum beam analysis is essential for realizing carbon neutrality and circular economy goals.

Bio:

Dr. Nagai earned a Doctor of Engineering from Kyoto University and has been with Toyota Central R&D Labs., Inc. since 1994, currently serving as Executive Officer and Division Manager of Emerging Electrification Technology. His expertise spans automotive catalysts, fuel cells, and catalytic reaction engineering.
