Abstract:
In this talk, Dr. Sparks will discuss his work on implementation of advanced SEM characterization techniques into a pre-existing 3D serial sectioning workflow with registration against high-energy diffraction microscopy, with the final workflow intended to provide detailed and multi-scale microstructural data to future models of fatigue crack initiation and growth. He will particularly discuss the details of how he selected one of the available HR-EBSD techniques and how the performance of the final choice was characterized, including multiple secondary requirements (e.g., precise determination of detector geometry) that became necessary to take full advantage of the increased orientation resolution. For electron channeling contrast imaging, he will discuss his successes, difficulties, and a potential path forward via novel hardware. Finally, he will cover implementation of automation for consistency in serial sectioning and mentorship of a graduate student who improved the data registration workflow.
