Abstract:

SAES Group has been the industry leader in non-Evaporable Getter (NEG) pumps since the 1970s, when the first NEG pumps entered the market.  SAES SORB-AC, CapaciTorr, and NexTorr pumps have been adopted in a wide range of UHV/XHV applications because of their high pumping speeds for reactive gases, their ease of maintenance, their small size,  and their inherent ability to continue pumping while unpowered.

Recently, the development of a new NEG material, ZAO, has led to the release of the CapaciTorr HV pump line.  While retaining the benefits of UHV NEG pumps, the CapaciTorr HV pumps are entirely particle free and are able to continuously work in the HV regime (1e-9 to 1e-6 Torr).  These pumps expand the use of NEG pumps to extremely particle sensitive applications such as electron microscopes and SRF cavities as well as to areas with high transient or constant gas loads.  Examples of the latter include unbaked and rubber sealed chambers, frequently vented systems, as well as cryogenic systems that are occasionally allowed to warm up.

This presentation will outline the principles of NEG action, the latest innovation in NEG technology, as well as examples of the use of SAES NEG pumps in light sources.
