23-ID-D: Sector 23 - Insertion Device D

GM/CA-XSD
Life Sciences

Sector 23 uses canted undulators to provide two independent sources for 23-ID-B (U33) and 23-ID-D (U30). The beamlines support macromolecular crystallography, with capabilities for micro-crystallography, serial crystallography, large-unit-cell crystallography, and MAD/SAD phasing. On- and off-axis microscopes provide parallax-free sample alignment. The new mirrors can focus the beam to smaller than 5 microns, with ~6x10^13 photons/s at 12 keV. Using both the mirrors and Compound Refractive Lenses (CRLs) in a transfocator the beam size can be varied from 1-50 microns in a few seconds, with ~4x10^13 photons/sec at 12 keV. The sample goniometer has a ~200 nm (peak-to-peak) sphere-of-confusion, ideal for micro-crystals. A powerful, user-friendly software interface (PyBluIce-EPICS) provides the ability to raster-scan the diffractive or fluorescence properties of a sample to locate micro-crystals, record serial crystallography data, or map the properties of larger crystals. The effects of radiation damage can be mitigated by spreading the dose over a 3-dimensional vector. A high-capacity (288 pin bases) ALS-style sample automounter provides high-throughput sample screening. The automounter accommodates ALS-style pins in Unipuck pucks.

Software
GM/CA provides users with an all-in-one PyBluIce graphical interface for both data acquisition and analysis. It is backed by an internationally developed EPICS system for reliable control of all beamline hardware. Data is processed in real-time by streaming to the GM/CA 1500-core computing cluster and the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility. Four Globus servers are available for downloading data to users' home institutions, and 1.5 PB of local storage keeps data for up to 6 months.
