Transportation Resources

The following means of transportation are available for getting to Argonne.
Airports
Argonne is located within 25 miles of two major Chicago airports: O'Hare International and Midway. Argonne is about 45 minutes by car from each airport. Limousine service is available from each airport, and major car rental agencies serve both airports.
 

Travel by Car:

From O'Hare Airport: Drive east (toward Chicago) on Interstate 190 to the exit for Interstate 294 south (toward Indiana). Go south on Interstate 294 to the exit for Interstate 55 south (toward St. Louis); then take the southbound Cass Avenue exit (273A) off Interstate 55. Northgate Road, the entrance to the Laboratory's main gate, is on the right.

From Midway Airport: Take Cicero Avenue north to the entrance to Interstate 55 south (toward St. Louis), which will be on your left, then proceed as described above.

Car Rental Agencies

In general, limousine transportation to Argonne from the aiports is less expensive than a taxi or car rental.

 
Railway Information 

With careful planning, it is possible to travel to Argonne by public transportation. The Metra Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) line runs from Union Station in Chicago to Westmont (about 5 miles from the Lab). There is very limited morning and evening bus service (PACE #715, schedule subject to change); otherwise a taxi must be arranged in advance. Additionally, Amtrak arrives at Chicago's Union Station.

Rideshare and Taxi Services 

Rideshare drivers must either drop you at the Argonne Welcome Center (AWC) or enter the AWC with you to obtain a carpool gate pass to drive you directly to the APS building. They must drop you off / pick you up and proceed directly to the exit gate. Drivers are prohibited from exiting their vehicle, entering buildings and accessing common areas.

Taking a taxi from the Westmont or Lemont Stations is a short ride. Make reservation in advance.
