Abstract:

The APS upgrade (APS-U) project will require building and installing more than 1300 new magnets for the storage ring.  These magnets will need to be tested to ensure that they meet the field quality requirements, and also to characterize them for machine commissioning and operation.  Many of these magnets are similar in nature to those used in a typical accelerator.  Well established measurement techniques exist for such magnets, but measuring a large number of magnets in a time-critical production still poses some challenges.  Furthermore, the APS-U lattice uses some new magnet types, such as the curved transverse gradient dipoles (Q-bends) for which no well-established measurement technique exists.  Similarly, there are well established techniques for measuring the relative alignment between multipoles in a straight assembly, but not in a curved FODO assembly to be used in the APS-U.  The challenges to be faced in the measurements of all the APS-U magnets and alignment measurements in assemblies will be discussed in general, along with some possible solutions for the most challenging curved Q-bends and the FODO section.
