LRL-CAT is a dedicated, full-service, mail-in beamline for Macromolecular Crystallography, supporting Eli Lilly's drug discovery efforts as well as external academic and industrial users. Data collection is entirely unscheduled and automated, enabling rapid turnaround without the need for user intervention. Beamline highlights include: High-throughput data collection, Automated crystal centering based on both loop detection and X-ray diffraction, Automated crystal quality assessment and strategy selection, Fully automated data collection, processing, and transfer. We process an average of 13 crystals per hour, increasing to 17 crystals per hour when users supply a crystal-to-detector distance and bypass initial screening. To ensure optimal results, experienced beamline staff perform additional quality checks on every batch of crystals. Data turnaround is exceptional: users typically receive processed data within 24-32 hours of sample shipment, often in near real-time as data are collected.
