I knew I forgot something in my original message. Here are my boot
parameters:

the same boot parameters (different architecture, IP address of crate
and name of crate) worked with the hkbaja60 (note also that I booted
that one as me rather than having to use Nick's user id).

So, I think the net mask is ok.

All of this appears to work, just I can't debug it and it doesn't
appear on the screen - and I can't boot it as myself.

I think for the moment I'll got with Ned Arnold's suggestion of
logging out, and possibly rebooting.
