Rolf,

don't know if this helps any: we use alh with the motif interface hidden on virtual displays that nobody ever looks at. We start the alh-s by scripts using "nohup" so that we don't even have to go to the virtual display (we use vnc) when we start them. Our alh-s are mainly there to send email.
