Hi Pavel,
Every site is different.
Here is what we do at our site:
- Run soft IOCs on Linux when possible. This includes IOC that communicate with low-bandwidth hardware.
- Run soft IOCs on Windows when necessary. This includes IOCs that control hardware for which only Windows support is provided by the vendor. It also includes some high-bandwidth devices like GigE cameras where the GUI is running on a Windows machine, and we want the data to only go across the network once. Thus we want the IOC to be running on the same machine as the GUI.
- We use Windows machines almost exclusively as the client machines. This is typically because there is at least one piece of hardware (CCD detector, etc.) for which only Windows support is available. But it is also because users are more familiar with Windows than Linux.
- Running X-windows based GUI clients across the network is fine for most applications. But it does not work well for high-bandwidth applications like fast image displays. For that, running a local client is much better.

Subject: [Operating System platforms] which one do you use?
Hello,
I would like to know which operating system do you guys use as the IOCs, and also on client machines? And why?
Do you switch off GUI on IOCs? Do you use virtual systems? And how do such systems influence the overall performance?
As for me, I'm currently using linux-x86 (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5) run on a Virtual Machine, and win32-x86 (WinXP sp3) as a host system.
I want to put aside the virtualized linux system for awhile and install it as host. Am thinking about CentOS, since RHEL is not fully freeware.
Am I right in presuming that the Windows platform is more suitable for clients (CSS) rather than soft IOCs?
Any input would be greatly appreciated!
