Sorry for leading you astray, I'm sitting next to Ralph in an EPICS workshop 
and we've just worked out that we were both wrong (probably led by my assuming 
that the gateway would use the asTrapWrite facility, which it apparently 
doesn't after all).

You should look initially at the routines gateVcChan::write() and 
gateVcChan::writeNotify() in gateVc.cc which do the value put logging in the 
gateway code, plus a couple of other places, look for the callers to 
getPutlogFp() for those.  There are various related routines for setting the 
put-log file name and the file pointer it is written to, but you should be 
able to trace those through by tracing through the member functions and 
variable names used.
