Our "instance" is either "instance" or "position along beamline in cm," depending on where in the system we are. It's a little clunky, but I think it'll serve us well.

In either case, it's separated by "_" from the device name:Â cell31pump_002.


Note that for parts of the name that are using a fixed number of digits or characters, you usually don't need the separator. You can use that to make names nice and short.
