The APS does not use the aai/aao record types, which is one reason why they're
not in a better state. There is no documentation for them in the record
reference manual, no device support in Base as you said, and no tests in the
test suite. They were originally created by Dave Barker at CEBAF and added to
Base by Johnny Tang in October 1994. There have been a few commits to the
files since then, but usually only when we were making parallel changes to all
of the record types.
Basically these record types have not been maintained since they were added to
Base almost 16 years ago. There was a certain amount of outcry a while back
when I mentioned the idea of deleting them, but nobody has stepped up to fix
them, and unless someone does they will get deleted before any future 3.15
release. If your site needs them and already understands their limitations
and bugs it won't be hard to create a new home for them in a support module.
