May I suggest simply specifying a font for the text control that is in some way
unreadable?  You could either make it extremely small, or (using xlsfonts) you
could find a font whose alphanumeric characters just won't display properly (or
display as squares) in your current X configuration.  It's not the most elegant
solution, but it doesn't require any extra programming.
