Hi,

Instead of writing a new kernel driver I would probably use a generic
one for USB... There is a user space API for USB devices under Linux
that seems appropriate: libusb http://libusb.wiki.sourceforge.net/

It's been around for a while so there are plenty of examples around the
web (I think someone has even written python bindings for it!) Several
distributions ship it by default. 

If you just want to get your particular device up and running with EPICS
quickly you can write some device support, using libusb.

It would however be interesting to see if it's possible to use libusb to
write generic USB device support for asyn... That's probably not very
straight forward as USB is not quite as simple as RS232 or sockets...

Hi Emmanuel,

I have only used USB/RS232 and USB/RS485 adapters. The P&P magic built
into the Linux kernel maps them automatically to /dev/ttyUSB* where they
can be used with asynDriver just like local serial devices.

For a custom USB device that is not automatically supported by Linux, I
would suggest to write a Linux kernel driver instead of an EPICS driver.
Have a look at http://www.linux-usb.org/
