Hi all- I've found the problem... in this document: 

	http://www.aps.anl.gov/epics/modules/soft/asyn/R4-1/gpibCoreConversion/conversionNotes.html

in the sample code for "init_ai()", the line:

	 if (parm) {

should be:

	 if (parm == 0) {

since this routine is called with parm = "pass", and is meant to run during the first pass.
