For the DUV-FEL at NSLS, instead of relying on the network, the
safety personnel prefers the usage of cables carrying TTL signals
between the alarm and the bit I/Os of the radiation monitor IOC.
Thus the hardware engineer implemented an alarm box, which features
1) a heartbeat LED toggled periodically via a PV to indicate that the
IOC is up, 2) one audible alarm and one LED to be activated in case of
heartbeat failure (e.g. IOC is down), 3) one audible alarm and one LED
to be activated via PVs if the IOC detected that the radiation level
of any target location exceeded the limit, 4) buttons to reset the
sounds and lights of alarms. The buttons can be implemented either
via hardware integrated into the box or via PVs and GUIs, although
the former option eliminates the usage of a computer to reset alarms.
This alarm box is meant for the personnel who operate in the
control room.

Good idea! This way the safety personnel who work in the office can be
informed automatically as well.
