I've actually done this sort of thing a lot (using a PP link from an OUTLINK
field to a VAL field).  My favorite method is to use one of the "large" or
"medium" symbols for the ao record and define one of the "user-defined" input
links (FLD0, FLD1, etc.) to be VAL.  The latest versions of e2sr/e2db do not
mind if VAL is defined as both an input and output.
