Title: Investigating Spin Dynamics with EUV and X-ray Probes
Hosts: Yong Choi and George Sterbinsky
Abstract:
The dynamics of spins and spin ordering form the foundation of critical technologies and spin dynamics will play an important role in the emerging quantum information revolution. The spin dynamics in magnetically ordered materials (ferro-, ferri-, anti-ferromagnets) span many orders of magnitude in frequency space and it is also desirable to distinguish the spin dynamics of different constituents in a heterogeneous system. In layered magnetic metal thin films, the spin dynamics in one layer can be influenced by spin excitations in a separate layer. One approach to examine such effects relies on a combination of two powerful spectroscopies: ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). We have used this combination, termed x-ray detected ferromagnetic resonance or X-FMR, to examine non-local spin transport (spin pumping) in a magnetic trilayer sample and also to investigate the GHz-scale magnetic excitations in insulating ferrimagnetic thin films (Mn and Ni-ferrites). To access shorter timescales, we rely on a laser-based technique termed high harmonic generation (HHG). With HHG, we can examine element-specific dynamics but with access to much higher frequencies (~1 THz and higher). In addition to the X-FMR from the trilayers, I will discuss how HHG and synchrotron-based spectroscopy can be used to examine spin dynamics from the GHz to the THz range in oxide thin films.
