Topic: ALLVAR alloys for APS
ALLVAR Alloys are the only metals that shrink when heated and expand when cooled; known as negative thermal expansion. This presentation will introduce ALLVAR Alloys and discuss how the negative thermal expansion properties can athermalize optic and fastener design. Specific applications covered include smaller and more stable metering structures for reflective and refractive optics and negative thermal expansion washers for constant force fasteners. What can negative thermal expansion do for you?
Speaker: James A. Monroe is a scientist turned entrepreneur who has worked on commercializing high technology for the past eight years. He received his doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M University and founded ALLVAR after helping discover tailored and negative thermal expansion alloys, the foundation of ALLVAR's technology. As CEO of ALLVAR, Dr. Monroe has worked on commercial and technical development as the PI of several SBIR grants and contracts from NSF and NASA. ALLVAR's current mission is to manufacture and sell negative thermal expansion ALLVAR Alloy rods, tubes, spacers and other parts that enable size and weight reduction in many applications.
