The first synchrotron radiation source in the Near and Middle East became operational in 2018, with two beamlines serving general users. This talk will describe the arduous process of scientific diplomacy of transferring BESSY-I facilities from Berlin to Amman in Jordan, and rebuilding a new storage ring to be a modern synchrotron radiation facility. I will describe the long road leading up to a successful operating facility. The existing three beamlines (XAFS, Infrared, and Diffraction), and the near future three other beamlines of macromolecular crystallography, tomography, and soft-x-ray spectroscopy, will be described, along with the scientific description of the current experiments.
