Dynamics and Structure Group
Sector 8-ID

Welcome to sector 8-ID of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) located at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). Sector 8-ID is operated by the Dynamics and Structure Group, which is part of the APS X-Ray Science Division (XSD). Sector 8-ID has 2 experiment enclosures---8-ID-E and 8-ID-I---which have suspended operations in preparation for the APS-Upgrade. When the APS-U comes online (anticipated in mid-2024), the main research programs pursued at this sector will resume at two new feature beamlines at 8-ID (XPCS) and 9-ID (CSSI/GIXS/GI-XPCS).

APS beamline 8-ID-I is dedicated to the study of equilibrium fluctuations and fluctuations about the evolution to equilibrium in condensed matter in the small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) geometry via x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) or x-ray intensity fluctuation spectroscopy (XIFS). APS beamline 8-ID-E hosts programs to measure equilibrium dynamics via XPCS at large wave vector transfers.
