I do use your VM :)

Thank you for the suggestion, and indeed it was the solution to my problem!

After executing 
	
	su root /etc/init.d/iptables stop 

it works like a charm!

If you are using my VM, then, the problem may be to do with the firewall.  Check if you have it running.  In principle, caget should work fine, but just a day or two ago, a student came asked me the same question, which might be a firewall issue.  

You can check that with the following (try as root):

/etc/init.d/iptables status

If it’s running, then, you can turn it off by changing status to stop.
