Also, pvAccess would eventually be the better choice, because it can natively send/receive custom data.
With the recently released update of pvaPy this appears almost trivial, but we have not used it in production, yet.

+1 for using pvAccess.

Not only would that remove the need for a mailbox waveform record on an IOC somewhere, which requires additional resources, administration and maintenance overhead and adds a size limit (NELM of the waveform) and a point of possible failure.
It will also perform better, as the data is only transferred once (server -> client) instead of twice (server -> mailbox -> client).
