The limitation you may be thinking of is on the length of link fields
(eg. INP/OUT).  In the 3.16 series these can be arbitrarily long.

The length of a DBF_STRING field remains unchanged.  The usual
workaround is to use a waveformRecord with FTVL=CHAR.  This isn't new to
3.16 though.

Are you able to test with the latest 3.16.x code from VCS?  I've been
testing this with asyn/areadetector for some time now and haven't seen
this behavior.

Can you verify that the final .dbd file contains the line:

> registrar(asynRegister)
