In most cases you do not have to set these environment variables.
When client and server are on the same network (same UDP broadcast domain), things should "just work" (tm).

Only in non-standard setups, e.g. when IOCs or clients are in foreign (non-local) networks, these variables may be used to allow communication across LAN borders.

The gateway (to external networks) is only needed when you have clients or servers in external networks.
DNS is recommended, but not strictly necessary.
Make sure the network configuration on both server and client is correct - e.g. wrong netmask entries can severely affect CA connectivity.

Hi all,

I am running IOC server application on Epics. But I usually get confused about the settings for the EPICS_CA_ADDR_LIST & EPICS_CA_AUTO_ADDR_LIST for both server and client. For example.  On a proxy network,  the server running the Inc has the IP address 10.10.13.150 and for the client it is 10.10.13.149.The subnet setting is 255.255.128.0 with gateway and dns as x.x.x.x. I am unable to communicated between client and server. I am using EPICS_CA_ADDR_LIST=10.10.127.255(broadcast address not sure if it's right)
& EPICS_CA_AUTO_ADDR_LIST=NO.

Kindly help me how to set the above records. Also please let me know if the gateway and dns are disabled for communication would it be any issue?

Thanks
ARNAB
