About the Position – Head of Controls & Computing

Salary: $123,779 - $139,167 + 15.4% superannuation

Location:  ANSTO Clayton Campus (Australian Synchrotron), Victoria

The Head of Controls & Computing is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the Scientific Computing, Electronics and Controls Engineering functions at the Australian Synchrotron. The primary focus of the role is to ensure that  these functions adequately supports the Australian Synchrotron Scientific output by delivering quality, highly specialised and diverse software engineering and computing services and solutions. The role represents the Controls & Computing Group on the Executive Management Team.

Responsibilities

·         Provide high-level leadership, direction and strategic planning for the Australian Synchrotron’s Controls Electronics & Computing function with particular responsibility for developing data acquisition systems, instrument controls systems, computing infrastructure as well as data processing, data analysis, data visualisation and data management capabilities.

·         Develop collaborative relationships with ANSTO’s Controls & Computing leadership group and other national and international peers and experts to gain and share knowledge and identify technical trends that are industry best practise to benefit the Australian Synchrotron.

·         Work collaboratively with the Science, Accelerator Science & Engineering leads to identify the facility’s current and future controls and computing needs, ensuring that the function and groups are capable of meeting the identified needs of the facility now and into the future.

·         Manage the effective service delivery of Computing, Controls and Electronic systems for accelerators and beamlines utilising technical expertise for specification, design and implementation phases ensuring effective integration with Australian Synchrotron systems and customers.

·         Oversight of Project Management, Risk Management, Safety and Operational, processes and procedures within the facility’s policy framework

 

The preferred candidate must have

·         A Degree or higher level qualification in Physics, Computer Science, Electronics, Engineering or a related field.

·         At least 10 years of experience in a management role leading a diverse technical team predominantly in Computing, Controls and software support service areas including broad technical knowledge in the development of complex Computing & Controls systems and project management.

·         A broad working knowledge in developing and managing computing infrastructure (incl. high performance computing) , applications development, specialised hardware, data acquisition and instrument control systems, safety systems, data management and analysis and eResearch systems
