That is exactly what I was attempting.  No wonder it didn't work!  Thanks for the link to the git super-module, I was also looking for something like that.

Are you trying to build the github master branch tip of exampleCPP
against a V4.5.0.x release version of the other V4 modules? That
particular combination probably isn't compatible since there have been
many changes and additions to the exampleCPP module recently that depend
on newer versions of the other V4 modules.

Unfortunately that probably means that the particular example you're
looking for won't be available in the appropriate release version of the
exampleCPP module (from the release/4.1 branch). We're currently working
on the next major release 4.6.0 which will include the new examples
though, so you might want to try checking out and building the master
branch of all the V4 modules.

I have a git super-module which has submodules for all the V4 C++
modules including the example module, so you can try following the
simple instructions in the README.md at
    https://github.com/anjohnson/pvPackageCPP
