Hi Everyone,

I started looking around the MKS website for details about an ASCII RGA interface. They say that it is there in some sales blurb, but any documents about it are well hidden. I found a some documents at Caltech that were more useful:

http://mmrc.caltech.edu/Kratos%20XPS/MKS%20RGA/MKS.html

The document “RGA ASCII Protocol” had a list of ASCII commands and a port number. I set a static IP and then telneted to port 10014 and I am now sending commands to the unit. I am not sure if I am sending the right commands, but it is progress.

Regards,

Rory

Hi Rory,

I have worked extensively with the MV2 and currently have a non-EPICS solution for integration with CCFEs infrastructure.

I have the source code of MKS’s SDK, which was supported by them for Windows XP.

I updated it to support Windows 7.

MKS did not ask me for an NDA in respect of this, but I feel I should act as if they had.

Consequently, I shouldn’t share it without asking permission.

The Ethernet port connects with a normal network; by default it uses DHCP but you can program the unit to use a static IP address if you want to (that is how we use it here).

Cheers,

Peter.

Hello David and Keith,

If you have a link to the ASCII commands that would be useful and, David, It would be great if I could look at some code as well. When you say ASCII commands, I am thinking of a serial port but the MV2 only has an Ethernet port. Does the serial connect though that or do I need to set up something to connect to the digital I/O ports? I have attached a photo of its sockets to show you what I mean.

Thank you for your help.

Regards,

Rory

Hi Rory,

The Microvision 2 RGA (MV2) understands a set of ASCII commands specified in the MKS documentation. Do you have the documentation and are you aware of the commands?

We have an EPICS support module for the MV2, including an asyn driver, which is deployed on a number of beamlines. I can send you some code for this.

The ASCII commands are straightforward and the device can be controlled easily through telnet for experimentation.

Regards,

Dave

Hello,

I am trying to figure out how control a Microvision 2 RGA with EPICS. This unit has an Ethernet interface but no obvious API. I understand that Microvision 2 units have been connected to EPICS at Diamond directly through their Ethernet without using a PC running MKS’s Process Eye.  Any help with this would be appreciated.
