GNU Make from version 4 onwards has a way to control how the output streams from parallel jobs get displayed. I think all you're seeing is that several jobs are printing to stdout at the same time and their output streams are getting mixed up (which is the default behaviour), but you can control exactly when they get printed with the option -O (or
--output-sync) as described here:

Using 'make -j4 -O' is probably the simplest solution.
