In practice, the gateway has been quite reliable for us. But, as you point out, it does introduce an additional point of failure. For our use, the benefit of segmenting the networks and using the gateway far outweighs the risk of introducing this additional point of failure.
If your situation cannot tolerate this small, but non-zero, additional risk then I suggest you reevaluate your network topology to better match your needs.
