Hi Ralph:
My name is Mariano Ruiz and I am with Technical University of Madrid.
We have developed a methodology (UPM/CIEMAT) to integrate the FlexRIO devices in EPICS.
Basically you need:
a) To use LabVIEW to develop the code for the FPGA included in the FlexRIO card. This is mandatory because NI doesn't provide an alternative method, using for instance XILINX tools. We have developed some examples for: Ni1483 (CameraLink adapter), NI5761 (Analog Input), NI5781 (Analog input and output), and Ni6581 (Digital I/O). These examples can be used as templates to modify and adapt your design to meet your specific application.
b) To use a NI-RIO EPICS support that we have developed. This device support is implemented using asynDriver. We have developed this EPICS device support trying to minimize the development of code. We have already define functionalities to acquire signal, images, etc.
We have tested this solution in ITER fast controller with very good results (Linux RHEL). I can provide you more details if you need more information.
We have submitted a proposal to present this development in the next EPICS collaboration meeting at Saclay this October.
Best regards,
Mariano Ruiz

Subject: Device Support Options for NI RIO
Hi,
Currently I am trying to get a view of what options there are for connecting from EPICS to NI's RIO family of IO boards.
Specifically, I am only interested in solutions that do *not* involve LabVIEW *nor* vxWorks.
I found a talk from last year presenting an approach developed by UPM/CIEMAT. [1]
Are there any other things I should look at?
Thanks a lot,
~Ralph
