 Hi,
I am trying to install Archiver, I downloaded the ar_20070703.tar.gz from website, there are some errors when I execute "make" in the folder of ar_20070703, how can I solve the problem? Any help will be appreciated.

Did you read the download page before you downloaded that tar file?

On the extensions page [1], the AR archiver is in the section called "Unsupported - These tools are now orphaned; the original author is no longer available or is unwilling to maintain them, they may no longer build with current versions of their dependent software packages, or they were designed for hardware that is no longer available on the open market."

On its own download page [2], it says: " This is a very old archiver, which is not recommended for adoption at new sites. Unless you're already using AR, ask tech-talk for what programs you should look at instead."

So - please do not use AR.

There are three archivers that currently in common use. Ordered by age (oldest first):
  1. The Channel Archiver, the classical option. [3] (Debian packages readily available at [4].)
  2. The CS-Studio Archiver, RDB based, which is part of CS-Studio. [5]
  3. The Archiver Appliance, a new web-service based approach. [6]

There are even more options, but I haven't heard of any those being used at multiple sites.

Which one of the three is the best for you? Depends on the specs, environment, and time scale of your project/application.

Cheers,
~Ralph
