Last not least,

there is online documentation (in this case the page about the bo record in the Record Reference Manual at https://wiki-ext.aps.anl.gov/epics/index.php/RRM_3-14_Binary_Output), which has its issues and certainly does not answer all questions, but ... quite a few. ;-)
