As a counter point, I just checked a few of the cryo system IOCs here at the SNS. One of them has an uptime of 1,404 days and several have been running without problem for >1,000 days (last booted in 2010).
These are VxWorks 5.5 and are using autosave with a Linux NFS server (NFS v2).
