Hi Pete,
 > What sets the value of "foo" so that it passes the test for true?
It can be one of the following:
1. button click by the operator
2. motor completing its previous move && a certain status of the 
limit/home switches
3. some sort of timeout (2. does not occur after a certain time). This 
usually triggers some sort of a retry or a transition into the "failed" 
state.
