Wholly agree on Nick's comment.

Even though the EtherCAT spec and marketing information mention a UDP-wrapped mode of operation, Etherlab does not support it and I am not aware of hardware that supports it either.

Our servers have a dedicated interface for the EtherCAT scanner and for star-like topologies of equipment we use banks of Beckhoff EL1122 modules.

In our case chains haven't grown beyond about 50 devices split over four couplers or so.
