If you want to get started fast, try using the binary packages provided by Michael Davidsaver at NSLS-II. They should work on Debian based distributions.

http://epics.nsls2.bnl.gov/debian/

As for the alternatives for MEDM, there are a number of them. Which one is suited best for your application depends on your specific needs.
In general, it is safe to say that EDM is newer than MEDM and has a roughly similar set of features.
