Thanks to all those who replied, just to say that I had to set both
X11_LIB and MOTIF_LIB as follows:

X11_LIB=/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu
MOTIF_LIB=/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu
in extensions/configure/os/CONFIG_SITE file
 ( in my case, CONFIG_SITE.linux-x86.linux-x86 )
