Hi Pavel,

As a developer I prefer a leading edge system: Newest OS, compiler,
EPICS base etc. Why should I use software that has issues that have
already been fixed in the newest release? The stability of Debian
testing or non-LTS Ubuntu is good enough for my development PC.

Of course that is different for production machines. For these we use
Debian stable. If you have enough resources on your development machine
(which seems to be true for your machine) you can test your stuff in a
virtual machine. All our production machines (we only have i386 and x64)
can be automatically installed by FAI (http://fai-project.org). This
also allows us to quickly set up virtual machines on a development PC
that are exact copies of a production system. VMs also allow you to
build and test on 32 and 64 bit systems.

Cheers

Martin

P.S.: There are Debian packages for EPICS base and some tools provided
by Michael Davidsaver (BNL): http://epics.nsls2.bnl.gov/debian/ We use
them for development as well as for our production machines.
