We have a working Linux on MVME5500, but at the moment am plagued by an annoying problem with networking not reliably starting on boot.  Unfortunately the kernel we're using is pretty ancient and very heavily patched (2.6.20 with a 90,000 line patch which patches 314 files); I'd love to bring this up to date, but I don't see where I'll find time.

The Linux build we're using is busybox based, the rootfs build can be found here:
