There are also one-wire serial strings. They do not do well in a rediation environment - but they are cheap. We are distributing them around our equipment.

Depending you how dispursed the TC's are, you might consider something
like the AdvanTech ADAM 4000 or 5000 series modules.

The ADAM4011 is a single channel device that communicates over RS485, and
the ADAM 5000 family includes small, chassis based Ethernet or serially
connected modules that can handle single - 7 channel devices.

Small, lightweight devices that don't require much support to do their job.
